Mommy Glasses

It would seem that most generations, at least as far back as I can remember, have their own raunchy teenage movie. In the 1980’s there were the series of Porky’s movies. In the late 1990’s there was American Pie. In this decade we have had more from the American Pie series of movies and now Superbad.

I watched the Porky’s movies as a teenager, but they didn’t really have any effect on me. I was more enthralled with the teenage romantic comedies like Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink (pretty much anything staring Molly Ringwald). I was a very shy and naïve teenager, so the Porky’s movies were not anything I could relate to.

I watched American Pie when I was in my early-mid twenties. At the time, it was one of the funniest movies I had seen. I laughed out loud throughout most of the movie. The first time I saw it was with the hubs. We weren’t married. We didn’t have kids. We didn’t own a home. We were worry and responsibility free. The movie was just a funny movie.

This weekend we watched the movie Superbad. Once upon a time I would have thought this movie hysterical. Now I look at it through my Mommy Glasses. All I see now is a foul movie that scares the crap out of me. It scares me because I know my kids will be there someday. I’ve seen specials on teenagers, where they are candid regarding the own experience with the opposite gender. These types of specials lead me to believe that this movie is more real than not. That being said, I am seriously frightened for my children. I found myself wondering how I am going to raise my kids to respect their own bodies, respect members of the opposite gender, and respect their own purity.

I was so shy that I would have passed out if a boy even talked to me, so I am not really a good measure for what teenagers were like in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I can’t decide if the movies got raunchier or if I got older and gained more responsibilities. It’s easy for me to say, “kids today….” but is that really true? Are kids today really that different?

I've never heard of this movie, but that could be a good thing!

Kids today...you know, Hubs and I talk about this a lot and wonder if we are just old, but when we take a good look we see that kids are growing up way faster than we ever did - it is scary!

I feel exactly the same fears about raising my children. I also was shy when it came to dating, didn't date until college. I was naive and definitely not the "typical" 90s teen. I kinda hope my kids are a little similar so my worry button won't go over the top!
